3. DISTRIBUTION AND STATUS OF THREATENED SPECIES OF FRESH WATER TURTLE IN SELECTED AREAS OF INDUS RIVER SYSTEM

This project is being implemented by the Zoological Survey Department Islamabad with the financial support of Partnership Fund at the habitats of freshwater turtles in the parts of the Indus River system in the provinces of the Punjab and Sindh. The project has certain specific objectives

(i) studying the distribution pattern and status of freshwater turtles in selected water bodies and
(ii) undertaking studies on the habitat requirements of the species,
(iii) Investigating threats to the species and their habitat and
(iv) providing a blue-print for joint management of turtles.

 
Key achievement:
A comprehensive and authentic inventory of fresh water turtles is available that is helpful in making strategy regarding conservation of FWTs in Pakistan. Moreover, a strategy has been formulated for controlling hunting of turtles for sustainable use which contributes in poverty alleviation of the local communities.
