Indus for All Programme's first phase concluding ceremony held
On early Friday morning, A concluding ceremony for the first phase of World Wide Fund for Nature – Pakistan’s (WWF - P) Indus for All Programme was held at a local hotel in Karachi. Juvenile Marsh Crocodile rescued in Makhi Forest, Sanghar
On early Friday morning, the activists of Makhi Development Organization (MDO) found a juvenile crocodile stranding in agriculture fields surrounding Makhi Forest in Sanghar district. According to the members of MDO and villagers, who saw this animal, said that dogs were barking at crocodile and it was growling at them. The animal was soon caught by the activists who then informed WWF- P office at Chotiari Wetlands Complex. Knowing about this, the WWF- Pakistan team soon reached the spot and took the animal into its custody. The representatives of WWF - Pakistan inspected the animal and found no any injury. The animal was in a healthy condition. WWF – P team along with MDO members released it in protected crocodile habitat near Ghulam Hussain Legari village. Commenting on this, the President of MDO, Khalid Ali Leghari said that we believed that animal might had floated into a small canal and was trying to make its way back.. more

WWF - P urges for conservation of otter
Karachi, 27 July 2012: World Wide Fund for Nature – Pakistan (WWF- P) has recently located smooth coated otters in Makhi area of Nara Canal in Chotiari Reservoir, Sanghar district and taken their pictures using the latest camera trap technology. The otter is an endangered species which inhabits the wetlands of plain areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh. According to literature, thirteen species of otter exist in the world but only two are found in Pakistan; the Smooth coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) and the Common or Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra). Smooth coated otter is called as ludhro in Sindhi and Oodh Balao in Urdu. Existence of the otter is confirmed in 11 districts of Sindh including Kashmore, Ghotki, Sukkur, Qambar-Shahdadkot, Khairpur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sanghar, Jamshoro, Badin, Thatta and Mirpur Khas. more

Provincial mammal and provincial bird declared
Karachi, 10 July 2012: Sindh government has notified Sindh Ibex (Capra aegagrus) as provincial mammal and black partridge (Francolinus francolinus) as provincial bird of Sindh. The notification was issued by Sindh Chief Minister and copies have been sent to concerned departments. more

Call to Protect Keenjhar Lake
Thatta , Indus for All Programme of WWF Pakistan in collaboration with Keenjhar Conservation Network organized a festival at Keenjhar Lake. Speaking at the occasion Deputy Commissioner Thatta Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sial said that Keejhar Lake is vital wetland having mutilple functions inlcuindg economic and social well being of local people. He said that Lake is also famous for folk story of Noori Jam Tamachi and an intergeral part of cultural heritage of Sindh. He expressed his concern on mushroom growth of infrstaructure around the Lake and said that beauty of the Lake must be preserved. more

Partnership Fund Technical Committee meeting
The 10th meeting of the Partnership Fund Technical Committee (PFTC) was held on 23 May, 2012, at local hotel, Karachi. The first part of the meeting was chaired by Mr. Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Director General, Fisheries Department, Government of Sindh, while the second part was chaired by Mr. Fazal Ahmed Nizamani Senior Chief Water and Drainage, Planning and Development Department, Government of Sindh. Mr. Altaf. H. Sheikh, Manager Policy and Partnership Fund presented a detailed review of the progress of on-going projects along with the observations and findings made during various monitoring visits. more

Karachi, The 11th meeting of the Indus Eco-region Steering Committee (IESC) held on March 20, 2012 in the committee room of the Planning & Development Department, Government of Sindh. The Secretary Planning & Development Department, Mr. Mushtaq Chandina chaired the meeting on behalf of the Additional Chief Secretary, Planning & Development Department Government of Sindh. more

International Rivers Day observed
Karachi, Friends of Indus Forum in collaboration with WWF observed the International Rivers Day and launched two position papers namely Indus River Downstream Kotri and Manchar Lake. Speaking on the occasion Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Saifullah Dharejo said that last two years were very significant in terms of studying the impacts of climate change. Pakistan witnessed devastating floods in 2010 and heavy rains in 2011. He elaborated that rehabilitation of disaster affected people and draining out of water were two big challenges for them. He said that natural wetlands are diminishing at faster pace. more

Call to promote information technology for poverty reduction
Nawabshah, Speakers have urged the government to promote Information technology in rural areas to improve the socio economic conditions. They were speaking at the inauguration ceremony of information technology centre established at Sakrand by Pai Forest Action Network (PFAN) in collaboration with WWF’s Indus for All Programme.more

Pai Much Kachehry held
WWF-P’s Indus for All Programme organized a campfire ( Much Kachaher) in village Marri Jalbani near Pai Forest to revive the decades old cultural tradition of Sindh. Speakers emphasized the significance of culture in promoting the message of humanism, love, fraternity, equality, spiritualism and sustainable use of natural resources. They said that cultural gatherings give birth to folk wisdom which is vital for harmonizing human life with different aspects of nature. They demanded that deforestation and illegal occupation of forest lands in Sindh should be checked to save precious natural resources.more
