Nawabshah: Speakers have urged the government to promote Information technology in rural areas to improve the socio economic conditions. They were speaking at the inauguration ceremony of information technology centre established at Sakrand by Pai Forest Action Network (PFAN) in collaboration with WWF’s Indus for All Programme. Speaking on the occasion Programme Coordinator WWF Nasir Ali Panhwar said that the rural communities of Sindh are subject to many issues including shortage of drinking water, lack of health facilities & education, lack of livelihood opportunities and depletion of natural resources. He added that these issues have drastically affected their livelihoods and pushed them towards poverty and situation has been complicated by poor conditions of financial, natural, physical and human capital. He emphasized that the power of information technology should be used for rural development by integrating social entrepreneurship and information technology entrepreneurship. He added that information technology infrastructure should be made relevant tool catering to poor communities economic and social information needs, an interactive vehicle for socio-economic benefits delivery mechanism, and above all a tool for community development.
Principal Sakrand Monotechnical College Mukhtiar Tunio highlighted the role of information technology in the professional development of youths. He said that graduates of universities must learn computers as with simple degree they would be unable to attract employers.
Ali Hasan Director Indus Sillicon information technology should be used to learn protection of natural resources, environment and wildlife. He said that local folk wisdom needs to be redefined and shared with the world through information technology.
Social worker Azeem Rind said the computer literacy is essential. He hoped that the centre would contribute to improve computer skills of students, who can compete for jobs, which are mainly in private sector.
Site Manager WWF Pai, Hafeezullah said that the center has been established in collaboration with Network of 14 local community based organizations. The center has been provided ten computers, one printer, ten UPS and electric power generator.
Ameen Keerio Chairman of Network said that the center is offering courses of MS Office, typing tutor and English. The course duration is four months with additional course of two months for English. Hameeda Keerio, Dilshad Keerio, Chakar Jalbani, Rukhsana Memon, Mumtaz Rahoo, Nawaz Jamali and others also spoke.
