Distribution of Wild Sheep in Pakistan

Mapping species’ distributions has become an important component of conservation planning in recent years.

The GIS Laboratory is actively engaged in mapping and updating the distribution of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibian species in Pakistan. GIS Laboratory provided distribution maps for the three major publications including ‘Handbook of Birds of Pakistan” by Dr. T.J. Roberts, Richard Grimmett, Carol Inskipp and Tim Inskipp (2009), ‘A field guide to Birds of Pakistan’ by Z. B. Mirza (2007) and ‘A field guide of Mammals of Pakistan’ by Dr. T.J. Roberts (2006).

First ever distribution maps of fish, odonates, crabs, molluscs and other crustaceans of Pakistan were produced in 2004 based on Conservation Assessment Management Plan (C.A.M.P.) which is a consultative workshop process organized by the IUCN Pakistan. The C.A.M.P. Workshop process involves assembling experts to evaluate status of the selected taxa.

Digital datasets of species distribution are available in laboratory and several thematic maps based on these datasets are available on www.wwfgeonetwork.org for public access.
