An Indus Ecoregion Steering Committee (IESC) was notified in March 2006 to guide and review the progress towards achieving the targets and milestones identified in the Indus Ecoregion Programme. The committee is chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary (Development), Sindh Planning & Development Department, Ghulam Sarwar Khero and constitutes Secretaries from relevant departments of the Government of Sindh, a representative of the Federal Planning Commission and several representatives from civil society and industry, while WWF-Pakistan is included in the committee as Member Secretary.
IESC is a high level forum established to provide institutional support to influence the provincial and federal level decision making processes and mainstreaming of various actions identified by different partners into government policies. The committee has a mandate of recommending specific actions or measures to line departments and organizations and keeping the Indus Ecoregion Conservation Programme aligned to the environment and development frameworks formulated by the federal and provincial governments.
The IESC will meet at least once in six months. The first meeting of the committee was held in October 2005 when the ToRs, Business Procedures and membership were finalized.
