Master Trainers’ Training in Environmental EducationA five-day training workshop titled ‘Master Trainers Training in Environmental Education’ was held from 26 to 30 August 2008 at Civic Society Club Hyderabad, targeting the school teachers of District Sanghar. It was attended by 17 teachers including 7 females and 10 males representing Education Department Sanghar, Fauji Foundation School System and Junior Cambridge School System. The purpose of the training was to develop a cadre of master trainers in environmental education, who would train other school teachers in environmental education in their respective areas. The training also aimed to promote environmental education in schools of target areas (Indus for All Programme Sites) by enhancing the knowledge and skills of school teachers in environmental education. Organizational management training for CBOs/CCBs of SangharIn order to strengthen Community-based Organizations by enhancing leadership qualities and management skills of their office bearers, three-day training was conducted from 20 to 22 August 2008 at SPO Hyderabad for the selected representatives of CBOs of District Sanghar. It was attended by 25 members of different CBOs including Sustainable Development Foundation, Sukkur Village Development Organization, Chotiari Development Organization, Pakistan Fisher Folk Forum Sanghar chapter, Awad Development Organization, Bakar Development Organization, Goth Sudhar Sangat Akenwari and Makhi Development Organization. Organizational management training for CBOs/CCBs of Keti BundarFor the members of CBOs/CCBs of Keti Bunder, three-day training was conducted from 11 to 13 August 2008 at SPO Hyderabad. It was attended by 18 members of different CBOs and CCBs including United Community Development Organization, Hajamaro Mahol Dost Committee, Keti Women Development Organization, Maroora Tarqiati Tanzeem, Fishermen Rural Development Organization, Fisher Folk Development Organization, First Women Development Organization, Sahil Tarqiati Tanzeem and Mahol Sudhar Tarqiati Tanzeem. The purpose of the training was to strengthen the leadership and management skills of CBO Office bearers and their relationship with Indus for All Programme. Organizational management training for CBOs/CCBs of NawabshahThree-day training was held from 6 to 8 August 2008 at Cotton Research Institute, Sakrand for CBOs/CCBs of district Nawabshah. It was attended by 30 members of different CBOs/CCBs including Marvi Aurat Tarqiati Tanzeem Mari Jalbani, Sindhu Sbhita Mari Jalbani, VWA Mari Alam Jalbani, Kiran Aurat Tarqiati Tanzeem Talle, VDA Talli Jaffar Jamali, Aurat Tarqiati Tanzeem Haji Keerio, Goth Sudhar, Sangat Haji Keerio, SWLA Ghulam Hyder Bhutto, Sindhu Sujag Tarqiati Tanzeem Sakrand, Mehran Tarqiati Tanzeem Sakrand, Indus Goth Sudhar Tanzeem Sakrand, Sindhica Reforms Society Majeed Keerio, Sangat Development foundation, Marvi CCB Rahmo Keerio, Aurat CCB Rahmo Keerio Aurat Dev: Org: Sakrand, M.H.D.F. Training on the Use of Information Technology for Coastal Resource ManagementThree-day training was held from 28 to 31 March, 2008 at the Health Department, Makli, District Thatta, targeting the Forest Department’s Officials. It was attended by 13 people mainly from Forest, Livestock, Irrigation, Agriculture and Revenue Departments along with the staff of the Indus for All Programme. The purpose of the training was to create awareness among the participants regarding the use of Information Technology for the coastal resource management. Training on Forest Mapping and Management Using GIS/RS-based TechniquesA three-day training was organized from 21 to 24 July 2008 at Nawabshah Site office, targeting the Sindh Forest Department’s officials of the Nawabshah District. A total of 10 participants representing various department such as Forest, Livestock, Irrigation, Agriculture, and Revenue along with the employees of the Indus for All Programme attended the training. The aim of the training was to enhance understanding of the participants in mapping and managemnent of forest resources through Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing techniques. Organizational management training for CBOs/CCBs of KeenjharThree day training was held for the CCBs and CBOs of Keenjhar from 17 to 19 July at SPO Hyderabad. It was attended b 25 CCBs/CBOs including Jhole Mari Welfare & Development Organization, Youth Welfare & Development Organization, Keenjhar Fishermen Welfare Society, Roshni Keenjhar Welfare & Development Organization and Keenjhar Mahool Bachayo Welfare & Development Organization. The basic purpose of the training was to strengthen the leadership and management skills of CBO office bearers, to develop environmental advocacy behaviour among communities and also to strengthen the relationship between CBOs and Indus for All Programme. Organizational management training for CBOs/CCBs of KeenjharThree day training was held for the CCBs and CBOs of Keenjhar from 13 to15 July at SPO Hyderabad. It was attended b 25 CCBs/CBOs including Keenjhar Dost Welfare & Development Organization, Keenjhar Marro-Ara Welfare & Development Organization, Keenjhar Development Organization, Keenjhar Khushal Welfare & Development Organization and Keenjhar Mahool Dost Welfare. The basic purpose of the training was to strengthen the leadership and management skills of CBO office bearers, to develop environmental advocacy behavior among communities and also to strengthen the relationship between CBOs and Indus for All Programme. Training on GIS Concepts and Tools for Sustainable Natural Resource ManagementThree days training was conducted from 14 to 17 July 2008 at Sanghar Site office. It was attended by nine representatives from various departments of the District Government of Sanghar including Livestock, Fisheries, Irrigation, and Revenue along with employees of the Indus for All Programme. The training aimed at to enhance knowledge and skills of the participants to apply the concepts and tools of GIS in natural resource management programmes. Youth Training Workshop On Environmental Education and AdvocacyIn view of the importance of the role of youth in society, the Programme envisages to engage this vital segment of society in its implementation in each site so that the objectives of community based natural resource management and conservation of natural resources could be achieved. In this connection, a two-day training workshop on Environmental Education and Advocacy for the youth of district Thatta was organized by the Programme on 19 to 20 June, 2008 at SPO, Hyderabad. The training was attended by 22 participants including 20 boys and two girls representing the youth groups of Keti Bunder and Keenjhar Lake areas. Training of District Government Officials in “Planning Implementation and Monitoring of NRM Programmes” in District SangharTwo-day training was organised during 17 to 18 June 2008 to train district government officers about the planning, implementation and monitoring of NRM programmes in the district. The programme’s objectives 3 envisage improve institutional capacity with a view to sustain environment. In this connection it was urgent and necessary to build the capacity of local government, after enactment of devolution plan under Sindh Local Government Ordinance. In this ordinance the planning, improvement and monitoring of the development programmes has been assigned to the district government officers. In the present setup, the preparation plans and implementation jobs relating to NRM programmes usually carried out by Fisheries, Forest, Agriculture, Livestock, and Poultry Departments. Whereas, works and services departments develop the infrastructure to implement the schemes relating to infrastructural development for these NRM related programmes. Therefore, it was planned to train the above mention officers for better and sustainable management of NRM related activities. Training Workshop on Project Proposal Development Organized for Civil Society Oroganizations of Nawabshah DistrictThree-day training on “Project Proposal Development” was developed and delivered from 9-11 June 2008 for the nominated representatives of 14 community-based organisations of the District Nawabshah. A total of 23 participants (11 female and 12 male) attended the event. The participating organisations were the existing and potential partner CBOs and NGOs in Nawabshah. By the end of the training workshop participants had gained new skills essential for developing project proposals as well as for facilitating their approval and implementation within their respective organisations. The participants agreed to maintain contact and update the Programme on their progress in developing project proposals and expect support from the Programme in developing and implementing these projects. Training of District Government Officials in “Planning Implementation and Monitoring of NRM Programmes” in District NawabshahUnder the devolution plan forest, wildlife, fisheries and other departments have been made the local government subjects. Prior to which senior officials at the Provincial level were in charge of developing and implementing Natural Resource Management (NRM) programmes. Now with the devolved set up, district officers are stationed to oversee and monitor the operations pertaining to their respective departments and districts. Therefore, the Indus for All Programme envisaged building the competencies of the district officers in planning, implementation and monitoring of NRM programmes. For this purpose a two-day training programme was developed and conducted on 6 to 7 June 2008 for the district government officers of Nawabshah in “Planning, Implementation and Monitoring of Natural Resource Management programmes”. A total of thirteen participants representing, Agriculture, animal husbandry, water management, Forest, community development and wildlife departments of district government Nawabshah participated in this training including one field staff of the Indus for All Programme’s Implementation Unit Nawabshah. Training on Natural Resource Management using GIS and RSA formal training introducing the role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in forest monitoring was held at the GIS lab of Sindh Forest Department, Hyderabad, from 11-14 March 2008 and was attended by 18 trainees. The training also included a half day field trip to Miani Forest. The closing ceremony was attended by Secretary Forest and Wildlife, Mahboob Alam Ansari. The course emphasised hands-on training in ERDAS IMAGINE 8.7 and ArcGIS 9.0. Step by step exercises from the manual provided guidelines for GIS/RS data handling, management and map development. The participants were divided into six groups for discussions, field data collection and hands-on activities. In the map development exercise each group was asked to develop a map of Pakistan. The practical exercises dealt mainly with exploring the GIS and RS software, data handling/compilation and map development. Quick bird high resolution image of Sandspit was used for the Remote Sensing exercises.
