Two Day Training Workshop on Environmental Indicators organized for District Government Officials


The Indus for All Programme organized two day training workshop on Environmental Indicators for District Government officials at Hyderabad from June 26-27, 2009. The Programme Coordinator, Nasir Ali Panhwar presented introduction of Indus for All Programme. The training covered various aspects of environmental indicators including introduction, development of indicators lists, framework for environmental indicators, international framework, prioritization of environneta indicators list, sets of core and key environmental indicators.

Dr. Mohammad Yar Khuhawar Director High tech Resource Laboratory University of Sindh Jamshoro in his remarks at the concluding session of the training said that research can play significant role in addressing the environmental challenges. He highlighted the need to adopt reuse and recycling and added that this would help reduce the pressure on already scarce resources. He said that water pollution, air pollution and land degradation has increased over the period of time and it has affected the health of nation. He said that learning is life long process and hoped that the training would increase the skills and knowledge of the participants and they would play their due role in management of environment and natural resources.   

The Programme Coordinator Indus for All Programme Nasir Ali Panhwar said that WWF is implementing Indus for All Programme in four priority areas of Indus ecoregion. These include Keti Bunder and Keenjar in Thatta district, Chotiari Wetlands Complex in Sanghar and Pai Forest in Shaheed Benazirabad districts. The focus of the programme is to improve institutional capacity and awareness for sustainable environment management at micro, meso and macro levels. He added that Indus for All Programme is building the capacity of different partners from government, civil society and local communities to improve their understanding about natural resources and their conservation. He said that that environmental indicators are used to inform the stakeholders about the status of environment, pressure on environment due to human activities, impacts on the ecology and response of institutions to improve current  status and  mitigate the pressures.  

Speaking on the occasion the participants said that it is imperative that government officials at various levels have better understanding about environmental indicators, as they are involved in the management of environment and natural resources in number of ways. They said that the environmental indictors have played vital role in the development of environmental policies throughout the world. In addition, environmental indicators may be used as powerful tool to raise public awareness on environmental issues by providing information on driving forces, impacts and policy responses.

The Resource Person Ibad Rehman, Tufail Ali Zubedi, Jamal Shoro, Irfan Abbasi Abdul Razaq Ghangro, Hosh Latif Unar, Zahid Jalbani, Mumtaz Mangi, Nazia Bano and others also spoke on the occasion. The participants of the training were given certificates.
