Nature Festival held at Chotiari

Sanghar, June 24: Indus for All Programme – WWF Pakistan in collaboration with Chotiari Conservation Forum organized Nature Festival at Chotiari Conservation & Information Centre. Besides providing entertainment opportunity to local community, the festival promoted importance of conservation of biodiversity and environment of the unique ecosystem of Chotiari Wetland Complex. The event attracted more than 1500 people including herdsmen, fishermen and farmers living around the Chotiari Reservoir and adjacent lakes. The event started with the swimming competition in Baqar Lake, which now is named Chotiari Reservoir and is spread over an area of 18,000 hectares. As the event started, people from all walks of life came with their children to entertain themselves with colourful activities. Boat race, local indigenous game Belaro, theatre for awareness, tableaus performed by local school children and Sufi singers were the major segments. The documentary “Flowing Indus Forever" was shown to highlight Indus Ecoregion prgramme of WWF-P.


Speaking on the occasion, Programme Coordinator Indus for All Programmes WWF Pakistan Mr. Nasir Ali Panhwar said that the area people attended the festival in large numbers because there was a big vacuum of entertainment and they were facing acute poverty and destruction of natural resource.


He appreciated the theatre groups and school children, who during their presentation portrayed the issues, ignorance by the government authorities and community itself and urged the need to own these resources and protect the same for their future generations.


Mr. Zafar Ali Talpur Site Manager Chotiari highlighted the importance of Indus Ecoregion and Chotiari Wetland complex. He stressed on community participation to save biodiversity and protect forests. Mr. Talpur said that sustainable livelihood of communities living in and around Chotiari reservoir only depends on effective Conservation practices. Mr. Majeed Mangrio President Chotiari Conservation Forum also spoke at the occasion.


Local journalists were given shields for their contribution to promote nature conservation. Prizes were given to winners of swimming, boat racing, belaharo and Tablos. Famous Singer Mr. Allah Dino Khaskheli and Moula Bux Sanghrai entertained the participants with folk music.
