March 22, 2010: Government of Sindh Declares Neem as Provincial Tree of SindhOn 22 March 2010, the Chief Secretary, Government of Sindh through a notification No. SO (C-IV) SGA&CD/4-20/2010 declared Neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) as Provincial tree of Sindh. The initiative signifies the efforts and commitment of the Government of Sindh to conserve natural forests of the province. The proposal was jointly initiated by the Sindh Forest Department and the Indus for All Programme of WWF – Pakistan under the leadership of the Secretary Forests and Wildlife, Government of Sindh Mr. Mushtaq Ali Memon and the Regional Director Indus for All Programme Dr. Ghulam Akbar. “Similar proposals are underway to declare a Provincial animal and bird”, said by Dr. Ghulam Akbar. Neem is a fast growing evergreen tree with very dense crown. The tree height is about 15 -20 meters. The tree is native to India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, also found in Malaysia and China.
