18 August 2009 Honorary District Game Wardens in Sindh Trained to Promote Wildlife Protection in the ProvinceKarachi: 18 August 2009.10 Honorary District Game Wardens representing 10 districts of Sindh received one-day training in effective wildlife management, organized by the Indus for All Programme of WWF Pakistan in collaboration with the Sindh Wildlife Department, Government of Sindh. The training introduced the participants to various prospects and challenges of wildlife conservation in the Province, in addition to reiterating and clarifying their role in wildlife conservation.
Under the Sindh Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1972, the Honorary District Game Wardens have been entrusted with very responsible roles. In addition to foster an effective watch and ward mechanism they can be helpful in promoting collaborative efforts among the Wildlife Department, Civil Society Organizations and general public. Honorary District Game Wardens are the notables of their respective areas and are appointed with a view to assist Wildlife Department for protection of wildlife and associated resources. The Honorary District Game Wardens are appointed by the competent authority, under the provision of clause (i) of section 3 of the Sindh Wildlife Protection ordinance, 1972. At present 17 Honorary District Game Wardens are working in the province. In his address Dr. Dayaram Essarani, the Minister for Wildlife Government of Sindh expressed the view that “environmental conservation is one of the priorities of our government”. The resolution moved in the Sindh Assembly for making more stringent regulations to protect some of the wildlife species in the Province shows our commitment towards conservation of natural resources” he added. He appreciated the organizers for taking care of such an important segment in wildlife conservation. “The protection of wildlife in an area is very difficult without cautious response from the general public” said by Mr. Mushtaq Ali Memon, the Secretary Sindh Forests and Wildlife Department. “Because of the limited resources it is very challenging for the government to impose a ban on illegal hunting or commercial exploitation of wild resources, therefore, the role of the Honorary District Game Wardens is significant in maintaining an effective watch and ward mechanism”, he added. Dr. Ghulam Akbar, the Regional Director WWF Pakistan, while expressing his views about the training explained that “the role of civil society and local communities is very significant in protection wildlife. In various parts of the country we have very good examples of participatory management of natural resources in which, local communities help the state functionaries in enforcing the laws to protect wildlife. In this paradigm the role of the honorary Game Wardens is considerably important.” The participants of the workshop unanimously demanded to declare Nara Canal along with Chotiari Reservoir and adjacent areas as National Park, for which Minister Wildlife assured participants to make possible efforts in this regard. The participants also pledged to perform their duties effectively and assured their maximum support. At the end certificates were distributed among the participants. |
