7th Meeting of Indus Ecoregion Steering Committee held

The seventh meeting of the Indus Ecoregion Steering Committee (IESC) was held on 16 December, 2009 at the Planning & Development Department, Government of Sindh. The Additional Chief Secretary (Dev) Mr. Munwar Opal presided over the meeting. The Secretary Forest & Wildlife Mr. Mushtaque Ali Memon informed the meeting that forest act would be reviewed in collaboration with WWF.

The meeting was briefed about the major achievements of Indus for All Programme. The Programme Coordinator, Nasir Ali Panhwar, while briefing informed that training workshop was held for the honorary district game wardens of Sindh. The training covered various topics including prospects and challenges of wildlife conservation in Sindh besides highlighting role of district game wardens in conservation of wildlife. He said that review of wildlife protection ordinance 1972 has been initiated. On the national tree plantation day, 121,200 saplings were planted in four sites of the Programme, training on fish stock assessment & aquaculture was held. He further informed that implementation of livelihood plans has been commenced, while memorandum of understating has been signed with the University of Sindh, Mehran University and Ahan to promote institutional collaboration. The meeting was informed that construction of information centers at Keenjhar and Chotrai has been commenced.

The Coordinator NRM, Indus for All Prgramme Mr. Rab Nawaz, spoke on issues of special concerns. The Secretary Livestock & Fisheries Department Dr. Laeeq Ahmed Memon, the Regional Director WWF Sindh Dr. Ghulam Akbar, Mr. Hamid Marwat from Planning Commission of Pakistan, Chief Agriculture P&DD Mr. A.B Kalhoro, Mr. Ghulam Qadir Shah from IUCN, Ms. Zubeda Birwani from Shirkat Gah, Mr. Waqar Phulphoto from Sindh EPA, Dr. Bakhsal Lahsari from Mehran University, representative of Secretary Irrigation and Power Department, representative of DCO Shaheed Benzairabad, representative of Coastal Community Development Project, Manager WWF Sindh Dr. Altaf Abro, Manager Policy Ms. Khadija Zaheer, Manager M&E Mr. Shahid Panhwar and others attended the meeting.
