New body of Friends of Indus Forum elected

 

Thatta, 15 Oct: General body meeting of Friends of Indus Forum was held at Keenjhar. On this occasion new office bearers were elected for two years. Election was supervised by the committee consisting of founder president of Forum Mr. Naseer Memon, Mr. Shahid Panhwar and Mr. Ali Muhammad Shaikh.

Members of the Forum elected Mr. Sikander Brohi President, Mr. Ali Akbar Rahmoon Vice-President, Mr. Nasir Ali Panhwar General Secretary, Mr. Ghulam Mustafa Mirani Joint Secretary, Mr. Altaf Sheikh Treasurer and Mr. Aaz Buriro Office Secretary.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Naseer Memon felicitated elected body and said that that there is tremendous potential to further build on the existing work. In the context of flood, strong foundations of advocacy have to be build. He said that though Pakistan is vulnerable to climate change and Sindh being tail end of the Indus basin is more vulnerable. He said that lower Sindh is having multiple threats including cyclone, tsunami etc. He said last year deforestation and encroachment in Riverine area were major contributors to flood. While, this year it has been proved that how bad engineering multiplies disasters and this would be major advocacy area in coming days. He assured that he would continue to extend support to forum in future.

Mr. Nasir Ali Panhwar, General Secretary of the Forum gave a presentation on the overall progress of the forum in three years. He informed that during this period of time renowned intellectuals, writers, social activists, journalists and environmentalists have joined the forum.

He said that development of the position paper in on downstream Kotri and Manchar Lake were vital initiative, which has been well received. He gave detailed account of activities in chronological order. He said that Dr. Ghulam Akbar, former Director Indus for All Programme has not only been the instrumental in formation stage of the forum but also continued his guidance and support at various stages. Mr. Hamsafar Gadhai, Mr. Zulfiqar Helpoto, Mr. Shuja Qureshi, Mr. Nawaz Kunbhar, Mr. Aijaz Sindhi, Mr. Majeed Thaheem, Mr. Naveed Soomro and others shared their views.
