13th meeting of Sub-Committee of Indus Eco-region Steering Committee held.

 

Karachi: The 13th meeting of Sub-Committee of Indus Eco-region Steering Committee [SCIESC] was held under the Chairmanship of Mr. Sohail Akbar Shah, Secretary Forests and Wildlife Department, Government of Sindh.


During the meeting, the committee recommended the Sindh Ibex as provincial mammal and Black Partridge as provincial bird to Indus Ecoregion Steering Committee for nomination. The Committee was informed that in this regard key stakeholders were consulted including major universities of Sindh, IUCN and WWF Pakistan.

Mr. Rab Nawaz, Regional Director, Indus for All Programme gave brief introduction of the programme to the committee and shared the detailed objectives of the programme.

Mr. Nasir Ali Panhwar, Programme Coordinator, Indus for All Programme, while briefing on the progress said that implementation of natural resource management plan and livelihood development plan is going on in four sites including Keti Bunder, Keenjhar Lake, Chotiari Wetlands Complex and Pai forest. He said that Hog Deer sanctuary and observatory hut at Pai Forest have been established and the ToPs are to be signed between the programme and Sindh Wildlife Department for the management of the facility beyond programme life. He informed that in Keenjhar Lake reed and weed management activity has been conducted to clean the exotic floras from the lake and community based fish nursery has also been established in which 5000 fish seed have been released. In Keti Bunder, the plantation of Mangroves at 1500 hectares was completed. He highlighted different programme activities including the institutional support to CBOs, awareness raising activities and partnership fund activities.

Earlier, Ms. Altaf Sheikh, Manager Policy & Partnership Fund, Indus for All Programme, briefed the participants about the progress of the decisions taken in the 12th meeting of Sub-Committee of IESC held on March 31, 2011 and at the Special Meeting of Sub-Committee held on April 14, 2010.

The meeting was attended by Mr. Fazal Nizamani, Senior Chief Water & Drainage Planning & Development Department, Mr. Aijaz Nizamani Additional  Secretary Forests Department, Mr. Ghulam Haider Mangrio Deputy Commissioner Sanghar, Mr. Haider Raza Deputy Secretary Forests Department, Mr. Saeed Baloch Conservator Sindh Wildlife Department, Mr. Hussain Bux Bhagat Project Director Kirthar National Park Project, Mr. Muhammad Shamil Hingorjo, Project Director SIDA, Mr. Imtiaz Mangi, Assistant Commissioner Shaheed Benazirabad, Mr. Riaz Wagan Conservator Forests Thatta and Dilshad Ali representative from Sindh EPA.

A Sub-Committee of Indus Ecoregion Steering Committee was constituted on July 13, 2007 to guide and review the implementation process of the Indus for All Programme on more frequent basis and recommend any action to be taken to Indus Ecoregion Steering Committee headed by the Additional Chief Secretary, Planning & Development Department.
