6th Meeting of Indus Eco Region Steering Committee held

The Additional Chief Secretary Development Planning & Development Government of Sindh Nazar Hussain Mahar stressed the need to adopt integrated approach in addressing increasing environmental and poverty related issues in the province. He was chairing 6th meeting of Indus Eco Region Steering Committee. He highlighted the role of community and said that through engaging civil society organizations better results could be achieved. He said that livelihood of coastal communities needs to be improved and various projects supported by Asian Development Bank, World Bank and other should enhance the coordination. The meeting reviewed the progress achieved by the Indus for All Programme of WWF is last six months. The Programme Coordinator Indus for All Programme Nasir Ali Panhwar informed that periodic wildlife and habitat survey has been conducted and significant reduction of bird specie has bee observed in Keenjhar, Keti Bunder, Chotiari and Pai Forest. He further informed that livelihood plans have been developed through extensive consultative process and implementation would begin in the current quarter. Under the alternative energy tweleve biogas plants have been installed, while nine solar units have been provided to the communities. Capacity building of district government officials in environmental impact assessment and environmental indicators were undertaken. He further informed that range of awareness raising material including book titled conservation and Islam, poster on Indus delta and mammals have been published, while conservation messages were disseminated through local festivals.

Rab Nawaz Coordinator natural resource management said that four species of tree have been proposed to declare one as a provincial tree of Sindh. The meeting discussed the provision of sanctioned water for Pai Forest and ban on illegal fishing nets. Mohammad Ali Shah of Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum offered full support to government’s drive against the illegal nets. The Secretary Forest and Wildlife Mushtaque Memon, Secretary Fisheries and Livestock Meer Mohammad Perhiar, Secretary Agriculture Agha Jan Akhar, Secretary P&DD Capt Ret. Javed Ishrat, Additional Secretary Finance Abdul Wahab Soomro, DCO Thatta Manzoor Ahmed Shaikh, DCO Sanghar Rasool Bux Samejo, DCO Shaheed Benazirabad Khursheed Naeem Malik, DG Coastal Development Authority Qabool Ahmed Shaikh, Director EPA Naeem Mughal, Representative of Irrigation Department, Ghulam Qadir Shah of IUCN, Umar Memon Project Director Coastal Community Development Project Chairman Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum Mohammad Ali Shah, Dr. Bakshal Lashari, Zubeda Birwani of Shirkat Gah , Dr. Mumtaz Suhag of SIDA, A.B Kalhoro, Dr. Altaf Abro, Khadija Zaheer and others participated in the meeting.
