Nawabshah, 05 June 2011:
Hundreds of people, including school children thronged to Pai Nature Festival, organized by WWF-Pakistan’s Indus for All Programme at H.M. Khowaja Library Nawabshah to mark the World Environment Day. The event was organized in collaboration with the District Government Shaheed Benazirabad and Cultural Youth Organization Talli Sakrand.
Speaking on the occasion the DCO Shaheed Benazirabad Jamal Mustafa Shah said that various environmental challenges are being faced today and these could not be addressed by single organization. He called for joint efforts of government, private sector and non government organizations to improve environmental conditions. He lauded the efforts of students for highlighting of environmental problems. He announced that District Government would involve NGOs and CBOs in upcoming monsoon plantation in the District.
Programme Coordinator WWF Nasir Ali Panhwar said that theme of World Environment Day is forests . He said that forests provides various ecological, economic and social benefits. He deplored that forest coverage in Sindh is declining due to host of factors including water shortage, commercial logging, and illegal occupation of forests lands. He said that Pai Forest is one of the four priority areas of the Indus for All Programme. The forest provides habitat to unique wildlife species such as Hog deer and Grey partridge. Local communities living in surrounding areas depends on the forest’s resources for their livelihoods. Conservation of this forest is crucial for survival of numerous wildlife species and dependant communities, he added.
Razi Khan Jamali EDO Education Shaheed Benazirabad, Usama Anwar Site Manager WWF, and Ameen Keerio of Pai Forest Action Network also spoke at occasion. Shields and prizes were given to winners and runners up at the end of the event.
A large number of students took part in the festival by preparing 3D models reflecting various themes such as animals and plants of the Indus ecoregion. The main point of attraction was the competition among student in preparing their exhibits on the given themes.
