Training on Natural Resource Management using GIS and Remote Sensing

Indus for All Programme organized a series of weeklong trainings on forest and natural resource management techniques through remote sensing technology from 14 July to 1 August, 2008 in Sanghar, Nawabshah and Thatta districts. The trainings entitling “GIS Concepts and Tools for Sustainable Resource Management” were attended by various officials from different stakeholders including provincial government departments. Each training included a field survey for the participants to collect ground truth data. Moreover, post-training workshops on “Introduction to Decision Support System (DSS) and Land-cover/Land-use Legend Definition” were also organized for the participants in each district.

The concluding ceremony of the series of the trainings was held at Fisheries Community Hall, Keenjhar Lake where certificates were distributed among the participants. The Secretary Forest and Wildlife Department, Government of Sindh, Mr. Mushtaq Ali Memon was the Chief Guest on the occasion who also formally inaugurated the Programme’s DSS web portal
(dss-foreverindus.org). As part of the Indus for All Programme’s initiatives to provide institutional support to the government departments, the Programme Director, Dr. Ghulam Akbar presented a CD of GIS software to the Secretary Forest and Wildlife.
