The Geographic Information System (GIS) Laboratory at National Council for Conservation of Wildlife (NCCW) was established by Pakistan Wetlands Programme with a mission to support the Ministry of Environment in conservation and sustainable development by providing information on indigenous flora/fauna, habitats of conservation importance including wetlands, national parks and other protected areas. The Lab will serve as central repository and contact point for GIS related data on Wildlife and environment in the Ministry of Environment.
On December 2nd, 2008, 3.30 pm in the afternoon this facility was inaugurated by Secretary Environment.

The ceremony was attended by an august gathering of senior professionals from Ministry of Environment, United Nations Development Programme, Zoological Survey Department, World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P), Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA), Provincial and Territorial Forest, Wildlife and Fisheries Departments, Government of Pakistan, Economic Affairs Division, IUCN-Pakistan, National Agricultural Research Council, Capital Development Authority, Survey of Pakistan, Planning and Development Division and National Council for Conservation of Wildlife (NCCW).

The ceremony was started with the recitation from the Holy Quran. Then Welcome note was given by Ali Hassan Habib, DG WWF Pakistan. Mr. Richard Garstang, Programme Manager/ CTA, Pakistan Wetlands Programme, gave the Introduction of the Programme and the GIS facility. After that Faisal Mueen Qammar , Manager GIS , WWF Pakistan, gave a comprehensive presentation on Pakistan Wetlands GIS (PWGIS) followed by a flythrough of high altitude wetlands was presented by S.M.Raza, GIS Analyst, Pakistan Wetlands Programme. After that Chief Guest gave the thank you note.
